Hunterston Port in northern Scotland is one of Europe's largest coal-shipping terminals, handling more than three million tons a year. Owners Clydeport are supporting plans to convert Hunterston into a deep-sea container terminal to take advantage of expected international growth of container shipping.

For Scottish Enterprise, EDR Group supported the work of Steer Davies Gleave (SDG) in examining the likelihood of attracting and developing new and indigenous business as a result of the development of Hunterston as a deep-sea container terminal. The study examined the nature of the regional economy, existing ports, demand projections and new economic development opportunities.

The work of EDR Group focused on case studies of port-related economic development elsewhere around the world and their lessons for Hunterston. The final report assessed the potential for new logistics, manufacturing, engineering and services to be attracted to the surrounding region.
