Maritime Commerce In Greater Philadelphia - Evaluation And Economic Impact Study

For the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp., EDR Group worked with the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia to evaluate the economic role of the Delaware River ports (Philadelphia, South Jersey, and Wilmington) relative to other Atlantic Coast ports and implications for future growth at public terminals along the Delaware, particularly for the Port of Philadelphia. This involved an assessment by an expert panel of the competitive positioning of each of these ports relative to specific marine trade segments. In addition, the study identified sectors that are needed to support the port activities including: inter-modal carriers, logistics firms, and ocean shipping lines.

The project included an economic impact study of the port's current activity, development of alternative scenarios based on forecasts of freight movements in the Delaware River ports system and the necessary infrastructure investments to support future activity. The purpose of this evaluation was to assist the PIDC, a major landholder surrounding the Port of Philadelphia, in understanding what the competing future land use needs for the Philadelphia economy might be.
